May 4, 2012 - I wonder why they still use mocap. They've could created a big library of different recorded poses plus properties to tweak and combining them you would be able to have any animation you want without any mocap.

May 6, 2012 - why do they still use mocap? because it's pretty much the most advanced method out there. what you're suggesting is simply traditional frame by frame animation, which has been used for god knows how long. you should be wondering why they still use traditional means, not mocap. a big library's worth of tweakable animations? waste of time. you could never combine them in a way that would look as smooth, organic, or even as human as mocap.

May 9, 2012 - You're wrong. No I 'm not suggesting the traditional frame-by-frame animation. I'm suggesting an almost automatic system. In Curious case of Benjamin Button they did the same for the face. They used a research from 70's which described all possible human emotions in terms of a number of primitves that can be combined, and then they prerecorded some of Bred Pit's emotions. They could animate then the virtual face how they wanted without any input from Bred Pitt, almost automatically.

May 9, 2012 - How to combine poses? Well, there can be a weight system like 3d muscles. They've been using muscles for many movies. Muscles automatically stretch etc. according to their weight. Same with pose interpolation.

May 9, 2012 - My point is that there aren't that many poses. Their number is actually very limited. Take a look at Natural Motion's Euphoria, there can be adaptive prerecorded motions that naturally react to ever changing physical environment. Actually when they do mocap, they fix the animations manually all the time cause it often captures poorly.

May 12, 2012 - alright, well you obviously know more about what you're talking about then i do, i guess i misinterpreted your comment as suggesting something more archaic then it actually was. my bad.
