Aug 23, 2009 - It is the cognitive appraisal prior to any emotional impact that "marks things as good, bad or indifferent" - more accurately, promising threatening or inconsequential. The role of emotion in decision making is as part of one's totality of experience adjudged as relevant to the risks or promise attached to alternative courses of action. "Emotional states" are temporary moods or behavioral patterns which, though induced by emotional impact, are not emotions per se.

Jun 8, 2010 - You should always question what your decision making is based upon. If it based upon an emotional weakness, then the outcome is likely to lead to loss. Uncontructive patterns of behaviour is another factor because they affect how we tackle out negative states. Also, since we don't live in a vacumn, its essential to have the right people around you who can point out any errors your making. Beware those who support your choices based on a weakness.

Oct 1, 2010 - @micromilesaway No fucking shit Spock is a fictional character. But he's from a TV show, the movies come later. But that series made alot of good social and philosophical points, this being one of them. Also, you make no sense, you repeat words and everything is grammatically incorrect.

Nov 29, 2011 - but sometimes emotion leads us to a wrong decision even though we know exactly what is right..i agree! I can remember the intensity of emotion during a traumatic event, but cannot recall the fact of the event. Selective amnesia?

Feb 7, 2012 - This sounds like " A Conversations With the Doctor ". Many modern people are unable to conjur up an emotional relatedness when making a logical decision. Widsom is cultivating our social memory so we can recall how we felt about making different types of decision, pattern recognition. I do become excited about learning, going to museums, a good movie, a dinner with my spouse, etc. Planning social events with our primary group members is exciting and creates a strong social memory for me.

Apr 8, 2012 - People only do what makes them happy or what is least likely to detract from their happiness. It's all about maintaining the stability of the organism. This is where our concept of morality came from - as the brain evolved, it became capable of experiencing such things as sympathy and empathy, making it unpleasant to feel suffering (either directly or by proxy), so our new found consciousness (via the cerebral cortex), found a way to get around all this - by inventing what we call "morality".

Apr 11, 2012 - It is not a "mental thing" where I decide what to feel and then label it; more like my heart "lights up with joy" without my mind having anything to do w/it.

Apr 19, 2012 - Antonio Damasio gets it. Conscious critters are entirely feelings driven. That is why we are conscious. Without consciousness there are no feelings, and no thought or conscious action would be possible.. Without feelings we enter into a coma. Every little thing we do is feelings driven. Due to the nature of feelings, our mind automatically chooses what to do or think. Feelings give you the motive to do or think. Feelings also force the many separate functions of the brain to act as one.
