Oct 19, 2011 - The widely held assumption that stresses or elation together with our responses to stimuli from the environment is to experience "emotion"" is simplistic. and inaccurate.,As a phenomenon emotion is limited to arousal of appropriate physiological responses to any perceived threat or promise. How we "feel " and /or respond following arousal relates to consequential mood and behavior.- e.g.Happiness and sadness are moods and anger a combination of mood change and behavioral response.

Oct 19, 2011 - Surprise , like shock, is not an emotion but a suspension of a belief structure in terms of expectancy. It is only when the stimulus impacting in surprise or shock is accompanied by a perception of threat that arousal. will take place. Surprise and shock are informative appraisals typically requiring some adjustment of previous belief structure when regarded as significant to a subject,s well being. structures.

Oct 20, 2011 - According to the cognitively mediated theory of emotion, all emotion operates like surprise and shock. Essentially, we make a low-level appraisal of the situation and then feel emotion, have physiological responses and run from the bear all at once.

socint74 mowi:

Oct 20, 2011 - Apparisal and and judgment that threat or promise is present precedes arousal. The term "low- level" appraisal refers to time limitation in terms of determining determining response using reason( by living organisms so equipped.) The role of emotion as an instant response mechanism is to serve survival and well being. Emotion is the physiological change flowing from instant appraisals and our awareness on sensing such arousal. Subsequent "feelings" are behavior are not..

Oct 20, 2011 - There is no scientific evidence to support the assertion that awareness of danger, arousal, physiological changes and "running from the perceived danger" occur simultaneously nor does the idea make much sense. You refer to "emotion operating like surprise and shock." I have pointed to the difference between emotion and shock or surprise. The latter do not inherently represent threat or promise , are not emotions and do not induce arousal of physiological change...

Oct 20, 2011 - I have two other videos here on emotion but my goal is a general introduction. More a more detailed discussion about the topic, you might consider reading more about the Schachter-Singer theory of emotion.

Oct 21, 2011 - I researched theories of emotion for thirty years and found nothing convincing in terms of making clear distinctions between the initiation of emotion, awareness of arousal and ensuing sensations, thoughts and associated behavior. . I concluded that that the problem is largely to do with sloppy semantics arising from a fundamental error in assuming that, because we label and categorise aspects of our experience and thoughts as "emotions", that each is a discrete phenomenon.
