The tune sung in this version and the words "shot him in the rump with the handle of the skillet" come from the book "Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads" originally published in 1910. The book features songs and ballads as recorded in the field and transcribed by John A. and Alan Lomax. It marks the first time the song appeared in print. It contains dozens of stanzas and at least six different tunes (of which I am singing Version 1) .
