Instead of reading authors like King or Clancy for style and overall influence, you should read them as an overall template for becoming a writer but not becoming THAT kind of writer. My Advice: Write as much as possible so that you can develop your style and more importantly your own voice. The more you know about yourself as a writer, the smarter and more aware you will be.
