Apr 4, 2012 - He' only British if he is from Northern Ireland and he isn't, He is from the Republic so he is Irish not Bristish

deaniswell mowi:

Apr 6, 2012 - Britain is British, how hard is that for people to understand. You have an island called Britain, so it and it's people are British - not very complicated. Then you have a place called Ireland its people are Irish. Whether they are governed by British people (Northern Ireland) or governed by there own people (Republic of Ireland) they are all Irish. The whole reason for the name UK instead of just using Britain is a bit of Ireland is part of the UK so not all of the UK is Britain or British.

MsWentworth1 mowi:

Apr 6, 2012 - Ok well if you are from NI you can choose to have either an Irish or a British passport. I do believe if you take a trip to NI you may find that a good portion of the population there very much consider themselves to be British and would be quite pissed to be told otherwise. I don't really care. I would say it's more a matter of opinion, Some people from NI consider themselves to a part of the United Kingdom of Great BRITAIN and therefore British and then some people consider themselves Irish

deaniswell mowi:

Apr 6, 2012 - But they don't get a British passport do they. They get a UK passport. The UK is not the same thing as Britain - Britain is England Scotland and Wales, and is an island, the people born to that island and its off shore islands are British. The UK is England Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland as is a country. People from N.Ireland can call themselves UKish and be perfectly correct but calling themselves British is a reflection of where they originate from 400yrs ago not where they are now.

deaniswell mowi:

Apr 6, 2012 - Also its the United Kingdon of Great BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND. So as the very name of the country suggests northern ireland is not british.

MsWentworth1 mowi:

Apr 6, 2012 - You are correct it is the Uk of GB and NI. I guess my point is for some people from NI they consider themselves British. My husband has family from Tyronne and they consider themselves Irish but many areas of Ulster consider themselves British. Not all Unionist have plantation heritage but they still consider themselves British. I guess my point is if someone wants to consider themselves British, why not? I am sure when the Empire existed you had people who felt that way in other places too.

deaniswell mowi:

Apr 6, 2012 - But do you not see how ridiculous a sentence "they consider themselves Irish" is when they come from County Tyrone on the island of Ireland!! Everyone born on the island of Ireland is automatically Irish, the only consideration is whether you think yourself culturally native Irish or British planter. Unionism is a different thing, a wish to maintain the union between Ireland (Irish) and Britain (British), you dont have to be culturally a British planter to be a unionist, it's just most are.

MsWentworth1 mowi:

Apr 6, 2012 - All I am saying is some people not just from England, Wales and Scotland, consider themselves British. You may not agree, I may not agree, they may not be correct, but they consider themselves British.

losches04 mowi:

Apr 13, 2012 - no he is irish, he is from the republic of ireland, not northern ireland

Apr 14, 2012 - Yes, they get a U.K. passport, but under nationality it will say British Citizen.

Upthetown04 mowi:

Apr 17, 2012 - Nationality is a social construct it exists where people believe it exists. I'm sure there are native Americans who don't consider themselves American even though on a map its says America. I know a lad from Belfast as Irish as anything to me being Welsh but if I called him an Irishman he'd get pissed off. Im not a unionist but just labelling people Irish when they don't associate themselves with the identity won't make them feel Irish.
