Mar 28, 2009 - she has said many times that she is "profoundly" deaf and that she lost about 80% of her hearing...she has never claimed to be totally deaf. in fact, she explained at a clinic I attended that her condition is totally reversable through surgery but has chosen not to have the surgery because she feels like being profoundly deaf has made her a better musician....

Oct 19, 2009 - In her documntary "Touch of Sound", she says she's profoundly deaf. She can barely hear. She can hear fine with hearing aids, but she says she prefers playing without them, saying she can feel the music, and that that's been a far better form of listening for her as a musician.

May 28, 2010 - I've personally met her in person in Los Angeles while attending a play in Hollywood. She is an beautiful woman in person! Accusing her of not being 100% deaf is like accusing one of pretending to sign when they are in fact literate! So be careful where you point that finger, mirzamarco. :) Enjoy the performance.

May 28, 2010 - Not sure I was "accusing" her, Sanosuke. She admits she can hear very little and in a strange way, as if it was in a tunnel, or behind a large wall. Now I'm not in her head so I can't be sure how low/bad she actually hears. However, on this basis, we can state she's not 100% deaf, which was my point in the first place. Finally, she's a phenomenally good musician.

Sep 2, 2010 - Actually Evelyn is deaf because she can't hear people talk, she reads lips. But with music, she taught herself to hear through her body instead of her ears. She can differentiate different vibrations coming off different notes. I think think it's why she chose marimba, an instrument that gives of massive amounts of vibrations, especially to her feet (with she says is what she mainly uses to listen).
