Dec 26, 2010 - Hi Dom!! I have a suite I rent out in the basement and I want to lay laminate upstairs but I am concerned about walking noise. With a good underlay, do I need to worry or should I put maybe 3/8 plywood over top of the subfloor? What is good noise reduction underlay? I bought this stuff called Quietstep (foam rubber) is that any good? thx Dom

Jun 9, 2011 - Laminate flooring generally is "poor mans" equivalent of true hardwood floors. There are many different qualities of laminate some obviously will be better than others. I would never lay laminate in areas prone to damp or wetness ( Kitchens, Bathrooms etc ). Bear in mind for those of you with Dogs, they can be dangerous to you four legged friends, they will slip and slide all over the place and joint damage is not uncommon. Laminate has it's uses it's relatively cheap and easy to install,

Jun 9, 2011 - I wouldn't put laminate in a bathroom, water + laminate = Bad. It will buckle, not straight away but over time it will.

Jun 30, 2011 - i put this in my house with 7 people plus two dogs about 8yrs ago and it looks great still, never had a problem with it. my mother has walnut hard wood floors in her house and the floor looks bad it has dings and the lacquer is fading she had it done 5yrs ago at the cost of 900 bucks and it needs to be redone again. i did my whole floor for less than that and i cant see it messing up in my life time

Jul 28, 2011 - The laminate floor in my house is getting ripped out and will never EVER be installed again. This stuff was not meant to live on, it was meant to look at. Seriously, if you have a busy family it will not be long before you walk trails into the floor, unlike hardwood, it cannot be resurfaced. Also, washing a floor with a swifer? There again, only if you don't live on it. Mine is Pergo brand, I have trails and bubbles all over, it's garbage I tell ya, never install it.

Nov 12, 2011 - Can you seal laminate flooring, with urethane or anything, to keep the water from penetrating the edges? Thanks for your time Dominick.

DominickDiy mowi:

Nov 12, 2011 - No not really. A laminate floor moves and moves a lot. A urethane will crack up real good.

Nov 12, 2011 - Thank you for taking the time to reply back ! Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but I appreciate your professional advice nevertheless !!! Have a good one Dom ! Catch ya later, Clad.

Feb 22, 2012 - Thanks for the video Dom. Just bought laminate floow for my kitchen. But the transition piece that butts to my living room carpet is backordered. How much space do i need to leave by the carpet line to allow for adding the transition piece later?

May 15, 2012 - I was thinking of putting a laminate over existing tile (tile has flat surface) and save the expense of removing the tile. I only have the front door to contend with. Is that a good way to go or would you recommend removing the existing tile?
