Farmer arose as a contemporary of Morgan, Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell, and Brownie, and in his early career he did make recording in the HrdBop genre, but he went on to record with Gerry Mulligan, George Russell, Jim Hall, etc., and he is remembered as a guy whose mastery of ballad playing is beyond categorization. In other words, to merely plug him into the list of top hard bop trumpets doesn't do the man justice.
